Fall has always been one of my favorite seasons here in Estes Park. There’s something magical about the way the crisp air settles into the valley and how the mountains seem to glow with a golden warmth as the aspens change color. Every year, I’m reminded why so many people travel from across the country to experience autumn in the Rockies.
The Elk Rut: Nature’s Drama
If you’ve never heard the bugle of a bull elk on a cool September evening, it’s an experience you won’t forget. During the rut, bulls gather their harems and have occasional sparring matches. You don’t even need to head into RMNP; the elk are often in town, filling the fields and golf course like they own the place (which, honestly, they kind of do this time of year!).
Fall Colors on Display
While the elk put on their dramatic show, the landscape adds its own breathtaking performance. The aspen groves turn brilliant shades of yellow and gold, orange and red. Whether you’re hiking in the forest or driving along Trail Ridge Road, fall colors make every outing feel like you’ve stepped into a painting.
Some of my favorite leaf-peeping spots include:
- Trail Ridge Road: The higher you go, the earlier the colors peak. Late September often brings stunning views of gold-drenched valleys below, with snow already dusting the peaks above.
- Bear Lake & Glacier Gorge: These trails wind through beautiful aspen groves with postcard-worthy reflections on the water.
- Cub Lake Trail: This hike is a hidden gem in the fall—rolling meadows, groves of aspen, and wide-open views.
- Peak-to-Peak Scenic Byway: A leisurely drive south of Estes Park offers wide stretches of shimmering aspens, and exceptional photo opportunities.
Best times to go:
- Weekdays, early mornings or late afternoons are the best times for photo-worthy lighting and are usually less crowded than weekends if you want a more peaceful experience.
Let’s Go Together
One of the best parts about living here is sharing these experiences. I’d love to join you if you’re planning a hike to catch the fall colors or thinking about taking a drive over Trail Ridge Road. Give me a call. I’d like to catch up and experience the beauty of fall in Estes Park with friends.
